Cedar Trees

Cedar trees are just amazing, the look and smell of them can simply put one into a state of garden euphoria. They are large, evergreen trees and can grow anywhere from fifty to over one hundred feet tall and are most commonly found in forests with a good amount of rainfall. They love moist soil conditions and prefer the soil also to have limestone in it. They have a long life span due to the moist habitat they require they are not prone to wildfires or other such injuries. These trees are not prone to disease another great addition to your yard or landscape if you can accommodate this beautiful creature. They get their intoxicating scent from the natural oils in the wood.

The oil is a toxic fungus further protecting them from disease and rot that some of these creatures cause to other trees and plants. The oils will normally start producing in more mature trees rather than younger ones. Cedar trees have also been an important part of many cultures as well as our history. They were used by Native Americans to build canoes and other water vessels and the wood from these trees was also used to make weapons, bowls and baskets to use. Some cultures even used the bark of the wood to make blankets and costumes. They are also a source of fuel when used correctly. More recently, they are used to make pencils and other such tools for our use.

The uses seem endless with this tree! However, most gardeners are looking simply to enjoy the scent and beauty of the tree rather than harvest for other uses. Cedar trees are magnificent and will add a great amount of beauty to your landscape as well as give your yard a great smell!
